Canada Adopts Cryptocurrencies: $80 CAD Offered to Every Citizen to Encourage the Transition
Ottawa, August 15, 2025 – The Government of Canada announced today an unprecedented initiative aimed at boosting cryptocurrency adoption nationwide. All Canadian citizens will receive $80 CAD in cryptocurrency, either Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH), as part of a program designed to encourage the transition to a digital economy.
A Global Change Driver Inspired by Worldwide Initiatives
The Canadian initiative is part of a larger global trend. In the United States, a similar program was launched by former President Donald Trump to give a boost to cryptocurrency adoption. In a speech given in January 2025, President Trump revealed government reserves in Bitcoin and Ethereum, emphasizing his firm belief in the need for a radical shift in global finance. His administration’s decision to distribute cryptocurrency amounts to U.S. citizens marked a turning point, prompting several countries to consider similar measures.
Today, Canada is taking a bold step by following this model. In response to the rapid evolution of the digital economy and the growing influence of digital currencies, the Canadian government, under the leadership of its Minister of Finance, has decided to go further by launching this national program.
